With so many demands on our time and money, when a new opportunity to volunteer or donate arises we really have to ask ourselves "Why should I get involved?". Well, allow me to make this decision a little easier on you.
What is a Back-2-School Event?
Serve Moses Lake acts as the catalyst for churches and schools to join together and celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Community and church volunteers contribute donations, time and talents. Students and their families are invited to come celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Food and fun activities are provided on-site as well as school supplies and other necessary resources for all students.
Since 2012, Serve Moses Lake has been working with local churches and schools across our city to put on "Back-2-School" events for area families. The event started as a single event at Larson Heights Elementary School. It was open to all elementary aged students and was so successful that it soon grew to include Middle school students with an event at Endeavor Middle School. Then, last year, more churches and schools jumped on board and SERVE sponsored 4 events- Larson Heights Elementary, Peninsula Elementary, Endeavor Middle School and Moses Lake High School. Each location provided food, fun activities (bounce house, face painting, etc.), school supplies, clothing, and the good news about Jesus.
This year, more churches have responded to the invitation to partner with local schools; resulting in seven Back-2-School Events being planned for this August! Each event takes on it's own personality based on the churches hosting it and the community it serves. It is exciting for us to see how the Lord guides each group separately to create unique and lively events. (Click here to see a list of all 2016 event locations)
1. Sponsor school supplies for a student by donating money ($10-$20 will provide supplies for one student).
2. Purchase school supplies off the list provided and bring them to our office. This can be a fun opportunity to get the whole family involved- especially if you have school-aged children, a trip to the store to pick out supplies for others could be a great opportunity for kids to learn about serving their fellow classmates.
3. New and gently used clothing, shoes, and children's books! As you clean out the closets to prepare for this year's new school outfits, consider what items might bless another family. Please only donate items that are still in good condition.
Last year we utilized over 200 volunteers to help make the events a success! Volunteers helped out in a variety of ways ranging from serving food to face painting. More information for volunteers will be available as we get closer to the event.
